Prof. And Algül, Head of Visual Communication Design Department, stated that artificially supported visual applications allow the realization of works that cannot be created according to the planned content or imagination in a short time, and Algül expressed that "In order not to stay away from the dynamics of the age and the needs and expectations of the sector, it is of great importance for designers to learn how to use artificial intelligence tools and to follow the developments in this field closely."
Stating that as a department, they take care to integrate artificial intelligence-supported applications into course content and student projects at every possible opportunity, Prof. And Algül said, "In the future, it is likely that new artificial intelligence tools will emerge in the field of visual communication, which we cannot foresee yet."

Üsküdar University Faculty of Communication Visual Communication Design Department Head Prof. And Algül made evaluations on visual communication design and artificial intelligence on the occasion of April 27, World Communication Design Day.
The concerns are not new, there have been similar ones in the past
Noting that with the increase in the impact of technology in social life, artificial intelligence, as the last popular application of electronic communication, has shown its effect on the professions in the field of design and it has been observed that news about the use of new artificial intelligence tools is on the agenda every day, Prof. And Algül continued his remarks as follows:
"Professionals working in the field of the profession are faced with new practical use opportunities as they try to maintain their profession in a rapidly changing environment. However, the fact that the studies have become easier and faster to apply through computers than before also causes these occupational groups to worry about the future. Such discussions and concerns are similar to the social reactions of the first days of the computer. At that time, there were concerns that some professions would be taken over by machines and computers would replace humans, but over time, these concerns were found to be unfounded. In fact, the issue is related to the process of adapting humanity to new working conditions and living practices with the developing world order and globalization. It is clear that human beings have difficulty in abandoning their habits, they have difficulty in changing their lifestyle, but they quickly adapt to comfort due to the convenience provided by technology."
With the development of technology, new opportunities arise in the field of visual communication
Although there are countries and geographies where the digital divide is still experienced, technological determinism has made its impact felt intensely, especially in the field of visual communication. Algül stated that "This is the case with the iconic Macintosh commercial released in 1984. At that time, the use of the Macintosh computer in publishing and communication reduced the workload from days or even weeks to short periods of time, allowing new business areas to be created and more time to be devoted to creativity. Similarly, with the development of technology today, new opportunities are emerging in the field of visual communication."
Artificial intelligence is used under two main headings
Noting that as of April 2025, the use of artificial intelligence in the field of visual communication is applied in two basic ways, Prof. And Algül continued his remarks as follows:
"The first of these is applications that are carried out within the scope of existing image-based design programs such as Photoshop. Artificial intelligence in such applications; It is used to perform commands such as field filling, field cleaning, filling with similar items and objects. These operations can be performed through the tools and commands provided by the program. The second form of use includes artificial intelligence tools for creating visual, audio and similar content from scratch. In such applications, users can produce content such as images, text, sound, animations, videos by typing certain commands (prompts) and use these contents in the design process. These visual materials sometimes constitute the entire design, sometimes only a certain part or minor touches.
Every information shared in the digital environment is collected and stored in one place
Explaining that artificially supported visual applications allow the realization of works that cannot be created according to the planned content or imagination in a short time, Prof. And Algül made the following remarks:
"It is seen that some posts on social media are gaining popularity from time to time. For example, the Ghibli trend, which has become popular as of April 2025, allows users to turn their portraits into hand-drawn keyframes at their will. Users share their animated portraits in this hand-drawn style on their social media accounts. However, it is useful to be careful at this point. In the context of digital media literacy and digital footprint, it should not be forgotten that every information shared in the digital environment is collected and stored somewhere. In order not to stay away from the dynamics of the age and the needs and expectations of the sector, it is of great importance for designers to learn how to use artificial intelligence tools and to follow the developments in this field closely."
Artificial intelligence is used in student projects
Stating that as Üsküdar University Faculty of Communication, Visual Communication Design Department, they take care to integrate artificial intelligence-supported applications into course content and student projects at every possible opportunity, Prof. And Algül said that "For example, '2024 Fall Semester 2nd Year Magazine Cover Design Exhibition' and '2024 Fall Semester 1st Year Design with Artificial Intelligence Exhibition', content was produced in line with certain themes using artificial intelligence tools and integrated into the projects."
You may prefer to use...
Stating that it is a matter of preference to use artificial intelligence tools, which have started to gain an important place in content production in today's visual communication design field, Prof. Algül said that "However, if today's conditions are shaped intensively by these tools, it would be a healthier approach for designers to learn the subject and then decide whether to use it or not. In the future, it is likely that new artificial intelligence tools will appear in the field of visual communication, which we cannot yet foresee today. For this reason, it is important to follow closely with the current developments of the field, which artificial intelligence tools can be used for what purpose and how it is of great importance for designers to have information about the creation processes of the content produced with these tools."
