Üsküdar University Perfusion Department held its 2nd monthly scientific meeting in February
Üsküdar University Department of Health, Culture and Sports (HCS), Faculty of Health Sciences Perfusion Department and Perfusion Club held "the 2nd Monthly Scientific Meeting of February." Many medical topics were discussed at the meeting, from the use of ECMO devices to replantation techniques. At the same time, a wide range of medical innovations were discussed, from cardiac surgery to pediatric cardiac surgery.
The meeting was held at Üsküdar University Faculty of Health Sciences Ibni Sina Auditorium.
The organized meeting was chaired by Prof. Hikmet Koçak, Vice Rector of Üsküdar University and Faculty Member of the Department of Cardiovascular Surgery; Prof. Deniz Süha Küçükaksu, Faculty Member of the Department of Cardiovascular Surgery at Başkent University; Prof. Noyan Temuçin Oğuş from Yeditepe University Hospital; and Prof. Ali Kocailik, Head of the Department of Perfusion at the Faculty of Health Sciences.
At the event, Perfusionists Işık Betül Kutlu, Hasan Bayram, and Cüneyt İmamoğlu participated as speakers, while Perfusionists Tarık Demir, İsmail Yerli, Hilal Can, and Ramazan Bacaksız took part as panelists.
Perfusionist Işık Betül Kutlu: "ECMO has reached high levels with advanced techniques"
Perfusionist Işık Betül Kutlu delivered a speech titled "Our Experiences with ECMO Using Only Pneumatic Power as an Energy Source in the Kahramanmaraş Earthquake". Kutlu stated that "On the second day of the earthquake, aid came from many countries. Among them was an ECMO device and it was sent to Kahramanmaras. However, it could not be used because the hospitals were inadequate. When Gaziantep was consulted, I thought we could evaluate it somehow. There were cardiological shocks due to cold weather due to cold. Although we expected that we could help, I did not expect that we would be able to use the device so quickly. ECMO, which has a history of about 40 years, has reached higher levels today with advanced techniques and special instruments."
Perfusionist Hasan Bayram: "We aim to increase the success of replantation"
Perfusionist Hasan Bayram made his presentation titled "Different Use of Extracorporeal Circulatory Support: Isolated Arm Perfusion". Bayram stated that "In replantation procedures, we use advanced techniques to preserve limbs and increase the chances of success. Since cooling alone may not be enough, we apply special protection methods. In particular, advanced medical devices such as neonatal oxygenators and special tube sets are of great importance in terms of ensuring the circulation of limbs and minimizing the risks of complications. Thanks to these methods, we aim to increase the success of replantation by preserving limb functions in long-term operations."
Perfusionist Cüneyt İmamoğlu: "Heart protection is a very important factor"
Perfusionist Cüneyt İmamoğlu, "Cardioplegia in Pediatric Cardiac Surgery: Del Nido? Calaflore?". İmamoğlu stated that "Early postoperative deaths are often associated with low cardiac output and postoperative problems, so heart protection is a very important factor. The pediatric heart uses glucose as its energy source, while the adult heart uses long-chain fatty acids, which makes a difference physiologically. The newborn heart is more susceptible to ischemic condition and can be further damaged due to calcium buildup during hypoxia. Although the techniques used in pediatric cardiac surgery are mostly taken from adults, they may not be suitable for young children and newborns. For this reason, different strategies have been developed. One of the most widely used methods is the Del Nido technique. This method is a long-acting solution and provides a great advantage in terms of heart protection."
After the presentations, a question-and-answer session was held.
The program continued with cocktails and conversations.
