Women in the media talked about being a woman in the media

Üsküdar University Human-Centered Communication Application and Research Center (ILER), Department of New Media and Communication and Department of New Media and Journalism organized a panel on "Media and Women". ATV Weekend Main News Presenter Nihan Günay, Show News Reporter İlknur Yılmaz and Beefikir Creative Agency Co-Founder Gözde Narman participated in the program as panelists. The panel discussed the presence of women in the media sector and the challenges they face.

Prof. Süleyman İrvan, Head of the Department of Journalism at the Faculty of Communication, Assoc. Prof. Gül Esra Atalay, Head of the Department of New Media and Communication, Assoc. Prof. Bahar Muratoğlu Pehlivan, Head of the Department of New Media and Communication (English), and faculty academicians and students attended the panel held at Üsküdar University South Campus Fuat Sezgin Conference Hall.

In the panel, the advantages and disadvantages of being a woman in the media were discussed.

Assoc. Prof. Gül Esra Atalay: "We continue to work for the empowerment of women in all areas"

The opening speech of the panel was made by Assoc. Prof. Gül Esra Atalay. Atalay stated that "As Üsküdar University, we continue to work to ensure gender equality and empower women in all areas with a human-oriented communication approach. This panel we organized is a step in that direction. We will continue to strive together to ensure that women are more represented in the media sector, that they take more part in leadership positions and that gender equality is achieved."

Nihan Günay: "Only reaching a point is not success"

ATV Weekend Main News Anchor Nihan Günay touched on the difficulties of existing as a woman in a male-dominated industry. Günay stated that "I worked hard and I have to continue to work at the same pace today. Because just getting to a point is not success. The real achievement is to be able to maintain and maintain that point. I understand that much better today."

İlknur Yılmaz: "Behind every successful woman, a man is sought"

Show News Reporter İlknur Yılmaz touched on the difficulties of being a female journalist in the media. Yılmaz stated that "I can talk about the difficulties of being a female journalist here for hours or even until the morning, but then I would be doing an injustice to other women. Because it's already hard to be a woman alone. There is a saying, "Behind a successful man there is always a successful woman." In our industry, behind every successful woman, a man is sought. It is a very interesting situation."

Gözde Narman: "Women should be positively discriminated against"

Gözde Narman, Co-Founder of Beefikir Creative Agency, talked about her interest in the communication sector and her managerial experiences. Emphasizing the conscientious burdens and social expectations brought about by women's motherhood roles, Narman said that "I am actually a person who believes that women should be positively discriminated against.”

The panelists told the students that in order to be successful in the media industry, they need to know a lot of people, and if they are strong, they can have a place in the media.

The event, where the experiences of being a woman in the media were discussed, ended after the presentation of certificates of appreciation to the panelists and a group photo shoot.
