Researchers from Üsküdar University and NPİSTANBUL Hospital, under the leadership of Prof. Nevzat Tarhan, shared their current research and results on computational neuroscience applications at the "EEG and Clinical Neuroscience Association (ECNS) 2024 Congress" held in Toronto, Canada between October 15-18, 2024. Prof. Nevzat Tarhan's big data-oriented studies carried out at the university attracted attention.

At the congress, NPİSTANBUL Hospital Neurology Specialist Prof. Barış Metin was presented with the "Presidential Award" by ECNS (EEG and Clinical Neuroscience Association).

Vice Rector Prof. Türker Tekin Ergüzel stated that they are working on a multi-model smart predictive architecture by supporting expression classification studies with audio data.

NPİSTANBUL Hospital Psychiatrist Asst. Prof. Elvan Çiftçi explained the diagnosis, treatment and prognosis processes in computational EEG analysis and MR studies and computational neuropsychiatric clinical applications.

Üsküdar University and NPİSTANBUL Hospital researchers, headed by President of Üsküdar University and Psychiatrist Prof. Nevzat Tarhan, shared their current research and results on computational neuroscience applications at the "EEG and Clinical Neuroscience Association (ECNS) 2024 Congress" held in Toronto, Canada between October 15-18, 2024.

Prof. Nevzat Tarhan talked about the chronological development of computational neuroscience

Prof. Nevzat Tarhan discussed the transformation of computational neuroscience into today's neuromorphic computer technologies starting from the Blue Brain project. In his presentation at the congress, where he shared chronological development, transformation and new generation research, Dr. Geoffrey Hinton, winner of the 2024 Nobel Prize in Physics and considered the "godfather" of artificial intelligence, included the fundamental discoveries and inventions that enable machine learning with artificial neural networks and his contribution to today's AI studies. In his presentation, Prof. Nevzat Tarhan appreciated the work of Geoffrey Hinton, who used statistical physics tools to create the Boltzmann machine, which can learn to recognize characteristic elements in a series of data and thus made a significant contribution to image-oriented big data analysis, and Tarhan also shared the big data-oriented studies carried out at the university in this field. The works shared by Tarhan also attracted the attention of the congress participants.

ECNS Award to Prof. Barış Metin

Sharing the studies carried out at NPİSTANBUL Hospital at the congress, NPİSTANBUL Hospital Neurology Specialist Prof. Barış Metin informed about artificial intelligence and big data-oriented studies with his presentation titled "Deep Learning in Psychiatry".

Stating that 2 of the 5 most read research articles in 2023 in the Clinical EEG and Neuroscience journal, which is scanned in the Scopus database and included in the Q2 quarter, are the studies of Üsküdar University researchers on big data analysis, Prof. Barış Metin emphasized the importance of the university's work being at the forefront in this field in his presentation. Prof. Barış Metin also stated that brain imaging and artificial intelligence studies will continue at Üsküdar University.

Prof. Barış Metin was presented with the "Presidential Award" by ECNS (EEG and Clinical Neuroscience Association).

Prof. Ergüzel's presentation on "Facial Expression Recognition"...

Üsküdar University Vice Rector Prof. Türker Tekin Ergüzel, who stated that they carried the new generation big data studies to a different field in the field of neuroimaging with the facial expression recognition study titled "Facial Expression Recognition", gave the following information about the study:

"Facial expression recognition (FER) studies involve big data analysis and modeling architectures to detect and classify human emotions based on facial expressions. These studies often use computer vision, machine learning, and deep learning algorithms to analyze facial features such as eyes, eyebrows, mouth, and nose. By identifying patterns in facial muscle movements, FER systems can detect a range of emotions such as happiness, sadness, anger, surprise, fear, and disgust. FER applications range from health (e.g., diagnosing mental health conditions) and education (e.g., understanding student engagement) to marketing (e.g., measuring customer reactions) and safety (e.g., identifying potentially threatening behaviors)."

Statting that “However, FER systems face challenges such as differences in facial expressions across cultures, occlusions (e.g. glasses or beards) and ethical concerns about privacy,” Prof. Türker Tekin Ergüzel said that they work on a multi-model smart predictive architecture by supporting expression classification studies with audio data.

An MRI study that will facilitate the differentiation of bipolar and schizophrenic patients was shared

Üsküdar University NPİSTANBUL Hospital Psychiatrist Asst. Prof. Elvan Çiftçi discussed the diagnosis, treatment and prognosis processes in computational EEG analysis and MR studies and computational neuropsychiatric clinical applications, and shared MRI studies and deep learning techniques that will facilitate the differentiation of bipolar and schizophrenic patients. Sharing the results of the study on patients with adult attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder, Asst. Prof. Elvan Çiftçi shared the critical findings of the research paper in which they distinguished EEG and clinical parameters that will distinguish patients who may respond to Deep Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) in OCD patients.

“What does the Society for EEG and Clinical Neuroscience (ECNS) do?

"EEG and Clinical Neuroscience Association (ECNS)", which prioritizes the clinical applications of EEG professionally, scientifically and economically, regularly publishes studies using new methods that evaluate brain functions such as SPECT, PET, functional MRI, together with researchers in the fields of evoked potentials, polysomnography (sleep EEG) and peripheral Neurophysiology together with Quantitative EEG (QEEG), which is a newer field in addition to classical EEG. magazine.
