President of Üsküdar University Psychiatrist Prof. Nevzat Tarhan was the guest of the "Ebru Doğdu ile Eğitim Yolculuğu” (Education Journey with Ebru Doğdu) program broadcast on TV100. Noting that choosing a profession is one of the important savings in life, Tarhan emphasized that what a young person should consider in choosing a profession should be 'In which profession can I develop and use my own capacity at the highest level'.

"Adolescence is the period when emotions are dominant rather than reason"

Pointing out that social isolation negatively affects adolescents, Prof. Nevzat Tarhan said that children turn to social media as a stress reduction technique. Tarhan stated that "Behaviors such as social media addiction, running away from home, substance use, and violence against parents have increased a lot in adolescents. Social isolation during the pandemic period negatively affected adolescents. In the loneliness study, it is expected that the rate of loneliness in older age will be high. 27 percent of those over the age of 75 say they are very lonely. 40 percent of people between the ages of 16 and 24 say they are very lonely and suicide cases have increased a lot. The rate of those who say they are lonely has accelerated and increased with the pandemic. Due to this increase, there is currently a serious psychosocial crisis. Children are not actually alone in the internet, but there is social isolation. They build virtual relationships in a virtual environment. They can't face the truths of real life because there is no real life. Adolescence is the period when emotions are dominant rather than reason. It is a period in which feelings are more effective than logic. During this period, if family ties are weak or there is a crisis in the family, these children turn to social media, smartphones and tablets as a stress reduction technique. As a result, problematic cases continue to increase."

"It is not the pandemic, but it is the way how it is handled that has harmed or benefited..."

Emphasizing that the family should be a safe space for children to grow up healthy, Prof. Tarhan stated that "Having the family as a safe space is the most important ecosystem for the child. When there is no safe space, the child does not grow up healthy. The first bill for the weakening of the family goes to the children. During the pandemic period, everyone was confined to their homes. Some families used this as an opportunity, relations got better. They were able to turn off their cell phones, spend time together. These families turned the pandemic into an opportunity. The marriages of people who could not manage the pandemic crisis fell apart and children suffered more. Therefore, the pandemic period itself did not hurt them. Depending on the way they handled the pandemic, people benefited or suffered..."

"One of the important savings in life is the choice of profession"

Stating that choosing a profession is an important decision, Tarhan stated that education consultants should be used to make the right choice. Tarhan stated that "One of the important savings in life is the choice of profession. Students have some information but not enough data to make the right choice. It is very important to get help from experts who know that data. For this reason, preference counselors and education consultants are very important. The first condition here is to know oneself. One needs to look at the following questions, 'what are my strengths, my weaknesses, my predispositions?' Investing in the field that a person loves does not necessarily mean doing that job. Some people have high social intelligence. They are more successful in the relational aspect. Some of them have high intrinsic intelligence. They can develop themselves more deeply by thinking deeply. Sometimes one has a high musical intelligence. For example, the person wants to be a musician. However, they do not become a musician but uses musical elements in a profession they love. In this way, it is necessary to direct it correctly. They usually think 'Which profession are we comfortable in, in which profession can we earn money?' when choosing a profession. However, what a young person should think about is in which profession I can develop and use my own capacity at the highest level. The child will know their own capacity or third parties will know it and direct it accordingly."

"Talents are the seed planted under the ground"

Stating that psycho-swot analysis should be done while moving towards the goal, Prof. Tarhan expressed that “Swot analysis is done in resource management and financial management. They identify strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats. Accordingly, one thinks, 'What aspects of me do I need to improve?' The person finds their weaknesses and analyzes the source. They turn to the business where they can develop their resources and progresses step by step towards that goal. Current young people tend to give up immediately at a small obstacle. This is always present in youth. Older generations were maturing with difficulty. Current generations need to mature in abundance. It is harder to mature in abundance. They do not want to suffer. They do not use their own capacity. Their abilities are not able to develop. However, talents develop when they are challenged. Talents are the seed that is planted under the soil. It is subject to rot in the mud, it is forced, but a flower grows out of it. Therefore, it has to suffer even for this."

"Modernism has made freedom and hedonism a sacred value"

Referring to the global system's understanding of freedom, Prof. Nevzat Tarhan emphasized the balance of responsibility of freedom. Tarhan stated that "Modernism made freedom and hedonism a sacred value. It idealized limitlessness, irresponsibility, and insatiability. Freedom is important; however, when this is a freedom by ignoring someone else's rights and laws, it leads to selfishness. Freedom is important in terms of developing one's talents; however, it must be in a balance of responsibility. The global system encourages limitlessness, irresponsibility and insatiability in the name of freedom. In narcissistic people, this is seen as greed, insatiability, and limitlessness. There are a lot of skipping school, self-poisoning, suicide cases and violence in the new generations. This is due to the child's inability to learn the limits of life."
