Drawing attention to the difficulties faced by artificial intelligence algorithms while evaluating university candidates, Head of Software Engineering Department Prof. Türker Ergüzel stated that "Artificial intelligence makes evaluations and can give some information to the candidate through the verbal information written on the web pages of the relevant departments. Artificial intelligence algorithms are far from considering the skills of the candidates and making qualitative evaluation between departments."

Prof. Türker Ergüzel stated that "They should definitely come to the campuses and get information from the faculty members of the department and make their choices by considering their own skills and the skills required by the departments, and their future tendencies."

Üsküdar University Advisor to the Rector, Faculty of Engineering and Natural Science, Head of Software Engineering Department Prof. Türker Tekin Ergüzel evaluated the issue of whether university choices can be made with artificial intelligence.

Artificial intelligence algorithms can give some information to the candidate through verbal information

Drawing attention to the difficulties faced by artificial intelligence algorithms in evaluating university candidates, Prof. Türker Tekin Ergüzel stated that "Artificial intelligence evaluates and can give some information to the candidate through the verbal information written on the web pages of the relevant departments. While artificial intelligence algorithms can provide quantitative information, and they are still far from considering the skills of the candidates and making qualitative evaluations between departments. If you want to get an evaluation about a department, it gives verbal information and makes suggestions about it. However, algorithms are still insufficient for an evaluation comparison based on qualitative data such as comparisons of departments, the difference between two departments, or the comparison of the same department in two different universities."

Why is it important to come to the campuses?

Emphasizing the importance of candidates coming to the campuses and getting information from the relevant faculty members to make the right decision in their university preferences, Prof. Ergüzel stated that "They should get information, make their choices by considering their own skills, the skills required by the departments, and future tendencies. They can only get these values from people who are involved in the work, who know the publications of the faculty members and their work related to the field. Algorithms can make a comparison on the surface based on quantitative data."

Stating that artificial intelligence algorithms can make a comparison based on quantitative data, Prof. Ergüzel stated that the algorithms in their current form are far from the ability to make an integrated assessment of future preferences and employment trends, academic and professional expectations of the candidate. Stating that the main expectation from artificial intelligence algorithms is prediction skills, Prof. Ergüzel said that the prediction skills of these algorithms to guide the candidates are not sufficient yet.

Artificial intelligence engineering is popular

Stating that artificial intelligence engineering departments are popular and candidates tend to prefer these departments, Prof. Ergüzel said that "Many universities have opened departments related to artificial intelligence engineering or data science. We can say that today's developments are actually the result of the rapid progress of developments in the software world from physical systems. At the beginning of this process, while significant contributions were made to the field of engineering with Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Computer Engineering was opened to control these physical systems, Software Engineering was opened to train researchers who want to specialize in application development and contribute to the workforce in this field, and finally, Artificial Intelligence Engineering departments were opened to develop intelligent systems that deepen in the field of software and learn on their own. The "National Artificial Intelligence Strategy 2021-2025", prepared in cooperation with the Digital Transformation Office of the Presidency and the Ministry of Industry and Technology and with the active participation of all relevant stakeholders, also underlines the need for engineers trained in the field of artificial intelligence, especially in our country.

The number of high-tech companies is expected to increase

Noting that the number of companies producing high technology in our country is expected to increase a little more in the near and medium term, Prof. Ergüzel stated that "Especially in the defense industry, very valuable products supported by artificial intelligence are being put forward. As the number of these increases and they continue to produce economic value, software, computer or artificial intelligence engineers who will graduate in this field will also be employed."

It is important for them to improve themselves by taking artificial intelligence-oriented courses

Expressing his suggestions about the preferences of the candidates, Prof. Türker Tekin Ergüzel made the following remarks:

"My assessment of the preference of our candidates is that they prefer well-established and well-established engineering such as software engineering and computer engineering for now. Over time, they need to turn to sub-branches such as artificial intelligence, which they are interested in, where they can develop algorithms, self-learning, machine learning and deep learning. It is also important for candidates studying software or computer engineering to improve themselves by taking artificial intelligence-oriented courses. Because we anticipate that the industry will need it in the short term."

You can get superficial information from artificial intelligence interfaces

Pointing out the issues to be considered when choosing with artificial intelligence, Prof. Türker Tekin Ergüzel said that they can get superficial information through interfaces such as ChatGPT or Gemini; however, the main thing should be done by considering the candidate's skills through comparative evaluation and qualifications. Artificial intelligence interfaces are not yet sufficient for them to make this qualitative comparison in a healthy way. They should come to the campuses and get information from the relevant faculty members about their future professional trends, employment potentials and the skills required by the field, and see the campuses."

Information should be obtained from not only artificial intelligence but also experts!

Noting that the students asked general questions to artificial intelligence, Prof. Türker Tekin Ergüzel, "(Should I choose a specific department? This is my ranking), you will get general answers. What are your talents and skills? It produces answers that are completely independent of them. What are the student's tendencies? It responds independently of factors such as numerical skills and analytical thinking skills. However, when you do this interactively, you can get healthy guidance and guidance. Therefore, get superficial information from artificial intelligence interfaces, but you should definitely get in-depth information and qualitative comparison from advisors or faculty members on campuses. Because the four-year department they will study will determine their future professions. It would be a very ambitious approach to base this critical decision only on artificial intelligence algorithms. Therefore, it is useful to take this critical decision not only from artificial intelligence algorithms, but also in consultation with experts."
