An event on 'Women in terms of Social Rights' was held by Üsküdar University Vocational School of Health Services on the 100th anniversary of the Republic. The event was attended by Üsküdar University VSHS Social Security Program Head Asst. Prof. Orse Demirel attended. Demirel drew attention to the importance of social rights and emphasized that social rights have a very important place, especially for women.

The online event was moderated by Üsküdar University VSHS Head of Emergency and First Aid Program the Asst. Prof. Ayşe Bağlı.

"These rights are the rights that make the individual visible in society"

Üsküdar University VSHS Head of the Social Security Program Asst. Prof. Orse Demirel underlined why social rights are important. Demirel stated that "Social rights are rights that impose positive obligations on the state. These rights are the rights that make the individual visible in society. They are rights that also aim to reduce inequality and injustice in society. For this very reason, I wanted to evaluate women in terms of social rights. Social rights have a very important place for those who are likely to be exposed to inequality, injustice and discrimination, namely the employee, the unemployed, the elderly, the disabled, children in need of protection and women. We can classify social rights such as the right to work, the right to social security, the right to fair wages, the right to trade union and collective bargaining, the right to education, the right to health, the right to nutrition, the right to housing and shelter."

"We should not forget the special interests shown by Mustafa Kemal Atatürk"

Talking about the social rights of women in the post-Republican period, Demirel stated that "With the proclamation of the Republic, we see that the legal regulations and structural reforms that enable women to enter the public sphere have accelerated and a more institutional structure has gained. In all these, we should not forget Mustafa Kemal Atatürk and his special interest in these issues. I would like to remind of his contributions to the existence of women in both working and social life with the following words: 'If a society is content with only one of its kind earning the necessities of the time, that society will be more than half deficient. If a nation wants to develop and become civilized, it has to accept this point as a basis.’”.

Those who do not give up the fight win

Demirel stated that Türkiye is ahead of many countries when we look at the years in which women gained the right to vote and be elected according to countries, and talked about the visibility of women in social life and the practices related to this. Demirel said that "We can see many examples from newspaper reports, such as taking part in competitions as athletes, appearing as a theater actress, and Sabiha Gökçen taking part in working life as a female pilot. Women definitely emphasize the Republic and what it has brought in their success, and they state that they continue and embrace it. Of course, we have seen from the status and implementation of social rights that it is not enough just to have these rights. It is necessary to continue the struggle for these rights. Therefore, we can say that the courageous steps taken by the Republic under the current conditions have deeply affected the lives of women, and there is no doubt that the impact of those steps still continues today. Instead of the last word, I would like to conclude my remarks by saying, 'Those who do not give up the fight win.'"
