Üsküdar University Faculty of Health Sciences, Speech and Language Therapy Department Deputy Head Asst. Prof. Maral Yeşilyurt completed the associate degree program she started during the pandemic period and enrolled in the Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics after the Vertical Transfer Exam she entered. Therefore, Yeşilyurt became both a teacher and a student of the same university. Maral Yeşilyurt, who previously completed one bachelor's, two master's and one doctoral programs, said that "I want to address my students, young people. Do not be afraid to learn new things. Life is full of opportunities, and when opportunities knock our door, the important thing is to meet them in an equipped way."

Üsküdar University Faculty of Health Sciences, Speech and Language Therapy Department Deputy Head Asst. Prof. Maral Yeşilyurt talked about the process of becoming a student again while she was an instructor at the university.

Yeşilyurt stated that she enrolled in the second university without an exam during the pandemic period and said that "I was enrolled in Anadolu University Faculty of Open Education, Laboratory and Veterinary Health Department. I'm glad I registered. From that department, I transferred to the Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics with the vertical exam. Being a student in this field will give me the chance to dive deep into the kitchen in a clinical sense.”.

Explaining why she chose the Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics while conducting studies in the field of Speech and Language Therapy, Maral Yeşilyurt said:
"Actually, my goal is to go deeper in my field, to the bottom of the work. I work in the field of speech and language therapy, especially in the field of voice disorders and voice therapy. In this process, we could observe behavioral and pathological changes in the therapies we did. However, now different sciences in the world have shown me that the changes are at a more fundamental level. At first, I supported the basic, structural and genetic characteristics of voice formation, voice diseases, which are my field of interest, with readings; however, I saw that change at the genetic, structural and molecular level could be supported to a certain extent by readings. Thus, I decided to go down to the lab of this work. I decided to study a new discipline. Receiving an undergraduate education in addition to teaching and being a student of Üsküdar University in this field will give me the chance to go down to the kitchen of the business, that is, to the laboratory, in a clinical sense."

It will combine voice and genetics...

Dr. Maral Yeşilyurt stated that her aim with a new undergraduate program is to examine the basis of her field and said that "After completing this department, voice and genetics will always be a part of my career. After graduating from the Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics, my goal is definitely not only to move into that field, but there are other disciplines where these two sciences are combined, such as forensic sciences. Forensic voice and forensic DNA analyzes are now being done. When we combine the two areas, we actually have very different options."

Advice to young people to feel free to learn new things

Dr. Maral Yeşilyurt said that "I would like to address my students, young people. Don't be afraid to learn new things. Life is full of opportunities, and when opportunities knock our door, the important thing is to meet them in an equipped way."

I am just like my deceased grandfather...

Yeşilyurt stated that her close circle was not surprised that she entered a new education process and concluded her remarks as follows:
"My husband, children, mother and siblings were not surprised. They are waiting to see if there will be more after this. Before that, I had completed one bachelor's program, two master's programs, and one doctorate. In between, of course, I finished an associate degree program. Thanks to this, I was able to enter the vertical transfer exam. It seems to be a family tradition for us to read a new chapter every now and then. My deceased grandfather last graduated from law school at the age of 65 and graduated from his third university. Before law, he studied Physical Education Teaching and then History and Geography. I'm like my grandfather in that regard."

Celebration with a cake from the academicians of the department...

Appreciating Dr. Yeşilyurt's success, the faculty members of the Department of Speech and Language Therapy also congratulated themselves by cutting a cake for Yeşilyurt.
