Prof. Dr. Stephen Michael Stahl

BACKGROUND

Prof. Dr. Stephen Michael Stahl was born on September 14, 1951. He received his undergraduate and medical degrees with honors from the University of Chicago and Northwestern University. Professor Stahl received a PhD in pharmacology and physiology from the University of Chicago and is board certified in internal medicine by the University of Chicago, neurology by the University of California, San Francisco, and psychiatry by Stanford University.

Professor Stahl has held faculty appointments at Stanford University, the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), the London Institute of Psychiatry and the London Institute of Neurology, and is currently a professor at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) and an honorary visiting senior member of the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Cambridge, UK. He directs the psychopharmacology training and academic programs at the California State Hospital and supports the conduct of violence reduction assessments and treatments.

Professor Stahl was for many years the Executive Director of Clinical Neuroscience at the Merck Neuroscience Research Center in the UK. His interests include the production and dissemination of educational knowledge on diseases and their treatments in psychiatry and neurology, as well as on multimedia, the internet and how to teach.

He is currently editor-in-chief of CNS Spectrums. He is associate editor of Acta Psychiatrica Scandinavica and former clinical editor of the International Journal of Neuropsychopharmacology. He is on the editorial boards of many prestigious journals, including the Journal of Neuropsychopharmacology.

He has conducted numerous research projects recognized by the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), Veteran Affairs (VA), and the pharmaceutical industry. He has published more than 500 scientific articles and book chapters, 33 books and over 1600 scientific presentations and abstracts.

Prof. Dr. Stephen Michael Stahl's Essential Psychopharmacology, now in its fourth edition, and Essential Psychopharmacology Prescriber's Guide, now in its fifth edition, are the most well-known books in our country. His lectures and courses based on his textbooks have reached tens of thousands of physicians, mental health professionals and students in dozens of countries on 6 continents. His lectures and scientific presentations have been distributed as more than one million CD-ROMs, internet training programs, videocassettes, audiocassettes and programmed training texts. His courses and award-winning multimedia training materials are used by psychopharmacologists and students worldwide.

Professor Stahl is a Fellow of the British Association of Psychopharmacology (BAP), of which he was formerly Vice-President, and of the American College of Neuropsychopharmacology (ACNP). A Distinguished Lifetime Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association (APA), Professor Stahl has also served on numerous medical and scientific advisory boards for the pharmaceutical industry, the biotechnology and medical information industry, and various public service organizations. He also has an active clinical practice experience specializing in the psychopharmacological treatment of refractory cases.

Prof. Dr. Stephen Michael Stahl was awarded the International College of Neuropsychopharmacology (CINP) Lundbeck Foundation Award for his contribution to postgraduate training in psychiatry and neurology. His books have won the British Medical Association book of the year award and Arbor Scientia has won the local chamber of commerce's business of the year award. He has also received the AE Bennett Award from the Society for Biological Psychiatry, the APA/San Diego Psychiatric Society Teaching Award, the UCSD psychiatry residency teaching award, and the APA Distinguished Psychiatrist Award.
