Professor Dr. Madjid Samii was born on June 19, 1937 in Tehran, Iran, into a family steeped in science. After graduating from high school in Iran, he moved to Germany and began his medical studies at the University of Mainz. For his achievements in his studies and the highest score in the final exam, he was awarded the "Iranian Ministry of Science, the best Iranian student in Europe". After graduating from medical school and completing his second study in biology, he began his specialized studies in neurosurgery at the University of Mainz and was admitted to the board of neurosurgery in 1970. In 1970, at the age of 32, he began his career as an assistant professor and was appointed deputy director of neurosurgery at the University of Mainz. A year later, in 1971, he became a professor of neurosurgery. During this year he received an offer from the "National University" of Iran to become a professor and head of the neurosurgery department. He turned down this offer in order to continue his studies at the University of Mainz. In 1977, he became Chairman of the Board of the Department of Neurosurgery (Nordstadt Hospital) in Hannover, Germany, a position he held until 2003. In 1988, he accepted the position of Head of the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Hannover (Germany), despite being offered several times to head the Department of Neurosurgery at Leiden University (Netherlands) and Mainz University (Germany). Since 1996, he has been the Head of the Departments of Neurosurgery at Nordstadt Hospital and Hannover Medical School. In 2000, Professor Dr. Samii founded the International Institute of Neurosciences (INI) in Hannover and was nominated as its president. In 2003, Professor Dr. Samii retired from his positions at Nordstadt Hospital and Hannover Medical School and devoted himself to the International Institute of Neurosciences. In 2004, Professor Dr. Samii accepted the presidency of the China International Institute of Neuroscience at Capital Medical University in Beijing, China. In 2010, the "Iran International Institute of Neuroscience" in Tehran was planned and the construction procedure was initiated. Professor Dr. Samii is the founder and president of the Iran INI, which will start in the near future. The most important aspect of Professor Dr. Samii's scientific career was his commitment to education and the development of neurosurgery. Since the beginning of his career as a professor of neurosurgery, he has attached great importance to the training of neurosurgeons from around the world. Since 1971, he regularly organized annual or biannual surgical lectures at the University of Mainz. In 1979, Professor Dr. Samii founded the world's first training course in skull base surgery in Hannover. In addition to his regular lectures in Germany, he started planning similar training courses in many other countries to increase his knowledge of neurosurgery. In 2004, as the president of INI-China, he organized a continuous annual international course in clinical neurosurgery. Also in 2004, the index board of the Iranian social security organization offered Professor Dr. Samii the position of head of neurosurgery department at Milad hospital in Tehran. Under his leadership a very strong training program for staff was planned and implemented. The department is now one of the most advanced neurosurgical centers. Since 2006, Professor Dr. Samii has been conducting International Neurosurgery symposia in Tehran. Professor Dr. Madjid Samii was the founding president and founding member of various national and international foundations and organizations. In his scientific life, Professor Dr. Samii has received many honorary professorships, honorary doctorates and visiting professorships around the world. He also gave many honorary and memorable lectures. Professor Dr. Samii is an honorary member of many national academies of medical sciences and national, international and continental societies of neurosurgery. He has received many prestigious national and international awards, honors and medals. He was the guest of honor at many neurosurgery meetings. He has given more than 1000 lectures as a specially invited lecturer at international congresses. He was elected president of the World Federation of Neurosurgical Societies (WFNS) between 1997 and 2001 after being elected president of the German Society of Neurosurgery, the German Society of Skull Base Surgery, the International Skull Base Society, the International Skull Base Study Group and the German Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. Since 2001, he has served as honorary president of the WFNS and honorary chairman of the WFNS foundation. In 2011, the WFNS appointed Professor Dr. Madjid Samii as ambassador to Africa. In this position he created the "Africa 100" project. Professor Dr. Samii is an editor, member of the editorial board and honorary editor of several medical journals. He has published 17 books so far in the field of neurosurgery. He has published more than 500 scientific articles. One of Professor Dr. Samii's most important achievements is that he has trained thousands of neurosurgeons around the world. Many of these neurosurgeons are leaders in their respective countries. In 2002, his students and friends founded an international neurosurgical society called "Madjid Samii Congress of Neurosurgeons International (MASCIN)". Later the name was changed to "Madjis Samii International Society of Neurosurgeons (MASSIN)". In 2011, the World Federation of Neurosurgical Societies (WFNS) decided to award an unprecedented medal of honor in the name of Professor Dr. Madjid Samii. The "Madjid Samii Medal" will be awarded every two years and a prize of 10,000 euros will be awarded to the most outstanding neurosurgeon worldwide, a high honor for the winner. The first medal and award ceremony took place in Brazil in 2011 during the WFNS meeting. The winner was Maurice Chox, a professor at the University of Marseille in France. Professor Dr. Samii married Mahshid Samii in 1961 and they have two children. His daughter Amireh Samii studied economics and his son Prof. Dr. Amir Samii is a renowned professor of neurosurgery and is currently deputy director of the neurosurgery center at INI-Hannover. |
