|
Born in Malatya in 1952, Hikmet Barutçugil started his textile education at the Istanbul State Academy of Fine Arts, School of Applied Industrial Arts in 1973. In the first year of his higher education, he became interested in calligraphy with the encouragement of Prof. Emin Barın, whom he knew and was a student of. Barutçugil realized the art of marbling when he started his studies on calligraphy and discovered the dynamism within him, and his love for this art soon enveloped his whole being. During his student years, he continued his research on his own and developed himself. After graduating from the Academy as a textile designer in 1977, he focused his studies on Ebru. She continued her research and studies uninterruptedly in London, where she went for specialization between 1978-1981. She opened brand new horizons by combining her artistic background from academic education with traditional arts. While keeping the tradition alive as it comes from the past, he has taken his field of interest to very different channels with his contemporary interpretations. Always aiming to develop Ebru as a science, the artist has developed many products ranging from daily use tools to materials used in interior architecture, believing that it is necessary to live to keep this art alive. He tried unprecedented marbling methods. He is credited in the literature as the person who invented the type of marbling known as "Gunpowder Marbling". He organized 108 solo and 103 group exhibitions, 169 courses and seminars, 99 conferences and applied marbling demonstrations and 6 art therapies in Turkey and abroad in order to promote and spread Turkish Marbling Art. In order to plan the works that will guide and inspire the artists of the next centuries, she has transformed a historical mansion from the 1830s into an Ebru house and turned it into a living "museum gallery". "Ebristan" Istanbul Ebru House still continues its marbling works on materials such as paper, fabric, ceramics, glass, wood, etc. and continues to practice other traditional arts such as calligraphy, illumination, miniature, and bookbinding.
