He was born in 1955 in Erzincan/Refahiye. He graduated from Istanbul Technical University (ITU) Faculty of Naval Architecture and Marine Sciences and received his master's degree in the same department. He worked as an assistant and research assistant at ITU Faculty of Naval Architecture and Marine Sciences. Between 1978 and 1993, he worked as a manager at various levels at the General Directorate of Turkish Ship Industry and Camialtı Shipyard. Between 1990 and 1991, he received specialized training on the Management of Safety of Life and Property at Sea at the World Maritime University (WMU). Between 1994 and 1999, he served as the General Manager of Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Istanbul Sea Buses (IDO). He was among the founders of AK Party. He was elected as Istanbul MP in the 22nd term, Erzincan MP in the 23rd term, and Izmir MP in the 24th and 26th terms. He served as the Minister of Transport, Maritime Affairs and Communications in the 58th, 59th, 60th, 61st and 64th governments. On May 22, 2016, he was elected AK Party Chairman at the extraordinary congress. As of July 09, 2018, he completed his term as the last Prime Minister of the parliamentary system. After the June 24 elections, he was elected as the first Speaker of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey in the new system. He was awarded the State Medal of Honor by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan on July 13, 2018 for his outstanding renunciation, sacrifice, success and usefulness for the survival of the Republic of Turkey, the indivisible integrity of the country and the nation, the peace, unity and solidarity of the society. Yıldırım speaks English and French, is married, has 3 children and 6 grandchildren. |
