Prof. Dr. Sakine Eruz opened an exhibition titled “Multiculturalism and Interpreters in the Ottoman Empire” at Üsküdar University’s Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Department of English Translation and Interpreting.
Organized in connection with International Women’s Day on March 8, the exhibition explores the Ottoman Empire’s multicultural social fabric and the historical role of interpreters, known as dragomans, within that structure. Prepared with an academic approach, the exhibition presents the duties dragomans assumed in the Ottoman diplomatic tradition and in relations between states, alongside the communication networks established across different peoples and languages.
Hosted by the Department of English Translation and Interpreting, the exhibition welcomes visitors interested in art and history at the university’s South Campus, E Block. Open to visitors from March 11 to 15, 2025, it offers an academic perspective on the relationship between language, culture, and diplomacy within the context of the Ottoman Empire’s multicultural society.
Open to all faculty members and students, the exhibition also serves as a valuable resource for researchers interested in the history of translation.
