Online Conference: NEWPATH: Intelligence: Technological, Social, and Cultural Ties

Organized in collaboration between Üsküdar University’s Faculty of Communication and the University of Trás-os-Montes and Alto Douro (UTAD), Portugal, the NEWPATH: New Paradigms in Communication Technologies and Humanity Symposium was held online under the theme “Artificial Intelligence: Technological, Social, and Cultural Ties.” The two-day event, held on March 6–7, brought together 52 researchers from nine countries, who presented 33 papers across six sessions.
The symposium opened with keynote addresses by Prof. Dr. Nazife Güngör, Rector of Üsküdar University; Prof. Dr. Süleyman İrvan, Rector’s Advisor; and Prof. Dr. Daniela Fonseca and Prof. Dr. Susana Fontes from UTAD.
The program also featured three invited speakers. Helena Sousa, President of Portugal’s Media Regulatory Authority, addressed emerging regulations on the use of artificial intelligence in journalism. Prof. Dr. Halil Nalçaoğlu examined how AI is reshaping processes of knowledge production, while Prof. Dr. Raquel Recuero focused on the growing power of social media platforms.
In the closing session, organizers emphasized plans to continue the collaboration between the two universities through in-person events and underlined the role of the NEWPATH symposium in opening new avenues for interdisciplinary research at the intersection of artificial intelligence and communication studies.
