The New Media and Communication (English) undergraduate program hosted Professor Dilruba Çatalbaş, a faculty member of the Department of Journalism at Galatasaray University, as part of its closing lecture for the spring semester of the 2024–2025 academic year.

In her closing lecture, Prof. Çatalbaş opened a discussion on the importance of legal regulations in the media field, inviting students to reflect on the risks posed by an unregulated media environment. Emphasizing the delicate balance between media freedom and regulation, she noted that positive regulations safeguard free journalism, while negative regulations are necessary to limit sensitive content.

In the second part of her talk, Çatalbaş turned to artificial intelligence systems, highlighting that while these technologies make everyday life easier, their excessive use may dull human cognition and contribute to the spread of misinformation. She explained that the European Union has introduced comprehensive regulations on AI, with strict oversight in high-risk areas and transparency requirements for generative AI tools. Drawing attention to differing approaches in Europe, the United States, and China, Çatalbaş underlined that the EU is developing a legal framework centered on user safety and digital rights.
