Who is A. Süheyl Ünver?

Süheyl Ünver was born in Istanbul and studied illumination and marbling at Medresetü'l-Hattatin. He was interested in Turkish decorative arts and miniature painting and graduated from Darülfünun Faculty of Medicine in 1920. He completed his specialty training in internal medicine at the Faculty of Medicine in Paris (1927-1929), after which he worked in various hospitals in Istanbul and worked as an assistant at the School of Industry. In 1930, he assumed the position of assistant professor of Pharmacodynamics in the Treatment Clinic of Istanbul University Faculty of Medicine. His interest in Islamic art and Turkish culture led him to conduct in-depth research on art history.

As an affiliate of Istanbul University, Ünver taught and researched both medicine and art history. Ünver, who made important contributions in the fields of art history, calligraphy and miniature painting in the Ottoman Empire and the early Republican period, was also recognized as a master calligrapher. In addition to being one of the famous calligraphers, he researched Ottoman culture and wrote many important works on the history of Turkish art. He founded the Institute of History of Medicine at Istanbul University and became its director in 1933. He was named professor in 1938 and professor emeritus in 1954. In 1967, he established the Chair of History of Medicine and Deontology at Cerrahpaşa Medical Faculty and also taught "Turkish Miniature and Ornament" at the Istanbul Academy of Fine Arts.

Between 1929 and 1969, he traveled to many countries such as Romania, Yugoslavia, France, Italy, Germany, Germany and the USA. He re-established the 500-year-old embroidery house in Topkapı Palace Museum and trained students here. He died in 1986 after his retirement.

Influence and Legacy

In addition to his work in the field of medicine, Süheyl Ünver paid great attention to researching Turkish art and analyzing cultural heritage. His interest in Ottoman and Seljuk art in particular made him an important authority in this field. Through his research and writings, he helped Turkish art to be better understood in the Western world. One of Ünver's most important works is his studies on miniature and calligraphy. In addition, his studies on written documents and manuscripts of the Ottoman Empire contributed greatly to the preservation and promotion of Turkish cultural heritage.

Süheyl Ünver was recognized for his contributions to Turkish art and played a major role in promoting Turkish culture worldwide. Ünver, who received many academic awards and recognitions, also displayed great mastery in calligraphy, miniature and book arts. He passed on his interest in and knowledge of these arts to the next generations.

He organized many exhibitions and continued his work with great diligence. His multifaceted research, especially in the combination of Islamic arts and medicine, made him one of the most important figures in Turkish cultural history. Ünver's works and studies are still used today as an important reference source for art historians, researchers and calligraphers.
