Istanbul AFAD Unit Directorate and Üsküdar Fire Station were visited
Second-year students and faculty members of Üsküdar University Vocational School of Health Services (VSHS) Emergency and Disaster Management Program visited the Istanbul AFAD Unit Directorate and Üsküdar Fire Station. Led by Program Chair Instructor Esad Sadık Demirtaş, the visit provided students with information on disaster and emergency management, showcasing response vehicles, equipment, and personal protective gear. Students had the opportunity to learn practical measures to be taken during disasters through simulations
Comprehensive Insights into Disaster and Emergency Management
During the visit, students received in-depth briefings on disaster and emergency management. Vehicles, equipment, and personal protective gear used in disaster response were introduced. Additionally, technical information about Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear (CBRN) threats was shared.
Practical Learning Through Earthquake Simulations
Through earthquake, flood, and fire simulation exercises, students experienced potential scenarios they might encounter during a disaster or emergency. The realistic earthquake simulation was particularly impactful, enabling students to learn the necessary precautions to take before, during, and after an earthquake.
Insights into Firefighting Structure and Processes
Another stop during the visit was the Üsküdar Fire Station. Students were provided with detailed information about the structure of the firefighting organization, response times, communication processes, and challenges faced in the field. Particular emphasis was given to the communication protocols during incidents, along with an explanation of the green, yellow, and red light systems used to manage operations based on the scale of incidents.
Hands-On Demonstrations of Team Preparedness
The students observed how this system is used to promptly notify standby teams and how preparation is completed in conjunction with emergency announcements. The students had the opportunity to witness firsthand the fast and effective response processes of the fire department.
