Instructor Birce Buturak Küçük: “Podiatrists Must Collaborate with Physicians”
Instructor Birce Buturak Küçük shared essential insights about Podology with the participants. She stressed that everyone should pay attention to foot health and called for increased education in this field.
Defining Podology, Küçük stated:
“Podology is a branch of science concerned with foot health and diseases. The term derives from the words ‘podos’ (foot) and ‘logos’ (science). However, using tools and materials alone is not sufficient; a multidisciplinary approach is necessary. Podiatrists must collaborate with physicians to accelerate treatment processes and enhance their effectiveness. In Podology, the scope of duties includes awareness-raising activities for foot health, medical foot care for healthy individuals, and evaluating foot pathologies as directed by specialist physicians.”
“We Conduct Comprehensive Evaluations for Patients”
Explaining the techniques used during the treatment process, Küçük said:
“We conduct comprehensive evaluations for patients. We take medical histories and gather past health information. We perform gait analysis, examine step patterns, shoe impressions, and socks. We check skin and tissues, assess foot and toe deformities, and investigate the causes of calluses by examining factors like shoes, deformities, or uneven weight distribution. Neurological evaluations include sensory tests, while vascular assessments involve pulse checks and mobility tests. Every minor detail must be documented to guide patients appropriately.
We cannot evaluate the body as isolated parts. For instance, you cannot focus only on a problem with the right foot and guide the patient accordingly. The body must be assessed as a whole.”
The event concluded with a Q&A session and a group photo with the participants.
