President of Üsküdar University Psychiatrist Prof. Nevzat Tarhan made evaluations on the subject of “Time Management” in the “Door to the Mind with Prof. Nevzat Tarhan” program broadcast on Dost TV and Dost FM. Prof. Nevzat Tarhan stated that the term “free time” is used more instead of “leisure time” and talked about the importance of being able to fill the free time. Emphasizing that a global laziness epidemic will emerge in the next 10 years, Tarhan stated that “We will see the price of the pursuit of pleasure as a global laziness, a global addiction, global suicides and a global unhappiness epidemic in the next 10 years.”

“It is important to be able to fill up free time”

Psychiatrist Prof. Nevzat Tarhan stated that he uses the term free time more instead of leisure time and continued his remarks as follows: “When we say leisure time, it seems like it is an aimless time. It needs to be a certain time discipline that is completely free. Therefore, this is something that people want and expect. It is a natural state. However, it is important to be able to fill up this free time, not as an empty, or aimless time. In fact, capitalist systems have now developed a theory called ‘The Theory of the Leisure Class’ to make leisure time a material for consumer culture. These people are very good consumers, and they are the material of cultural imperialism. In human nature, everything is beautiful in the right place and dose. For example, if you take a piece of jewelry and put it in a garbage dump, it will not look beautiful, but when you put it back in the showcase, it will look beautiful. Like this, everything is beautiful in the right place and position.”

“It takes mastery to use everything in its place and efficiently”

Stating that managing a financial budget and managing time work with the same principle, Prof. Tarhan expressed that “It requires us to use everything in its place and efficiently. This is related to self-development. This is not genetic, but it is something learned through planning. This is called resource management. In resource management, it is essential to grow your resources first. Then you control your resource, input control, output control and manage that resource. The important thing is to make decisions on the spot and on time. The principles in resource management also apply to one's time management. In other words, managing the financial budget and managing time act with the same logic.”

“It is necessary to use limited time efficiently”

Reminding that life should be used efficiently, Tarhan also stated that one should not compare oneself with others. Tarhan stated that “There is a limited time given to the person. It is necessary to think about how to use that limited time in the most efficient way. It is necessary to use it according to the efficiency principle of life. There is actually no such thing as free time. There is free time, and in that free time, a person is interested in another subject, music, art, and sports. That person takes themselves to a better state. The most common mistake when it comes to comparison is comparing oneself with others.”

“Free time is not a time for idleness”

Stating that there would be no civilization without the frontal region of our brain, Tarhan said; “It is the frontal region of the brain that makes a person human. Human beings are born prematurely, that part of the brain develops after birth. Man learns. Therefore, what we call free time is actually a gift given to us. The past is capital, the present is a gift and the future is an investment. When a smart person, a smart businessman has free time, he invests in a targeted way. He says, 'There is death, let me invest in the afterlife.' Free time is not a time for idleness. Leisure is just changing the category, changing the subject and going towards the goal in another way. In other words, it is necessary to go by developing a more relaxing technique, but not to forget the main purpose.”

“Doing nothing causes laziness”

Emphasizing that lazy people are not beneficial to society, Tarhan stated that “Doing nothing leads to laziness. Unhappiness comes after laziness. Dissatisfaction and a sense of emptiness comes. People who are idle become lonely. These people are parasites because they are not useful to society. They always live off the backs of others. They retreat to their room, they only have a phone or tablet in their hand and spend the whole day like that. If these people have the schizophrenia risk gene, schizophrenia can emerge after a while.”

“People who can think are not unhappy”

Tarhan said that in order to use time efficiently, it is necessary to turn leisure time into free time and continues his remarks as follows: “A power that sends you into this world with such superior qualities, the will does not leave you to live unattended. 'This is good, and this is bad. If you do the good things, I will take you to a better place, and if you do not do these things, you will pay the price. This world is a testing ground. When people think like this, they give meaning to their lives. When it gives meaning, then why can a person say no to things that are unnecessary, seductive, corruptive, and make a person lazy and waste their time? Therefore, we need to correct our philosophy of life. In other words, we need to turn our free time into free time to use our time efficiently. We need to have an ego ideal. When a person comes to the end of life and a person is only after concrete pleasures, when one loses that power, when illness comes, when old age comes and one loses their power, one is miserable, they say, ‘I am no longer young’. However, a person who knows the meaning of life will be a person who has succeeded in being happy by being useful to others, a person who has succeeded in leaving a mark by producing knowledge, by producing wisdom and by seeing the end of life. A person who can think is not unhappy.”

“People need to be the subject of themselves”Başlık 2

Pointing out that a person who is the subject of himself determines his own agenda, Tarhan said; “We need to set our own agenda ourselves. Should the media determine our day, our 24 hours?

Should politicians determine it? Should others determine it? You say, ‘I will determine my own agenda.’ A person needs to be their own subject. A person who is their own subject determines their own agenda and manages their own 24 hours. Events should not manage us, but we will manage events. If we can do this, we will reach our goal, we will use our time well and this is what long-term happiness looks like. The biggest thing that makes people make mistakes is their pursuit of short-term happiness.”
